There’s a reason Christ gave us a new command in John 13:34 to “Love one another,” and it’s because he made it clear that loving others when in need is the same as loving him when he says “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” in Matthew 25:35. It shouldn’t be a job we do but an honor to carry out in humility. Sadly, Newton County provides for such opportunity. As of the 2010 Census, Newton had a povery rate of 14 percent. With a given population of 101,505 that’s a little over 14,000 people who live day to day without the ability to provide the basics for themselves and their families. If even 1 percent of those 14,000 are homeless, that accounts for 140 souls who will spend this night outside, under a bridge, in a park, or any of a number of places without a bed and a meal.
